We commissioned her at Boston Chelsea then shook her down around the Horn to San Diego then on to West-Pac. Several of us became Plankowners, Shellbacks and Knights of Magelin all in the first cruise. I was just cruising the I-Net when I happened on your posting for Nick Pope. Nick and I served together on the LSD-39. Are you one of the original crew? I was nicknamed the "17 second kid" for being able to stop and lock the shaft in 17 seconds from 2/3 ahead. Unfortunately, although I was a good MM and knew both "holes" well, I hung out with the gettin' high crowd. Oh well, I was just 17 when I went in and was easily influenced. Sure do have a lot of wild memories though. Wow, 31 years ago!! I've been twisting bolts, pushing buttons, flipping switches and making fluid move ever since. How about these names; DeBois, Richmond, MOTO, MONK, Paulie, Paquette, Young, Mr. McClimonds, Blinky, "Swed Larson (got head busted in Boston Bar) Capt. William F. Keller, Lair? Many more don't come to mind right now. Got to go for now. If you are one of the guys I know then HEY! Sure was great seeing pictures of the LSD-39. GREYFOX
