In 1965 or 1966, when I was 11 or 12 years old, my grade school class wrote Christmas letters to people who were serving in Viet Nam. I wrote a letter to someone named George Smith. He wrote back to me on January 31, 1966. I still have his letter and envelope. His return address was PSG George F. Smith (I think "F" is his middle initial) RA17297476 HHC 2nd BDE APO San Francisco 96345 Here is what he wrote: January 31, 1966 Bein Hoa Viet Nam Dear Malcolm, I am writing this letter to thank you for the letter I received. It was very nice of you to think of us in Viet Nam at Christmas time. I hope that you had a very nice Christmas and got lots of presents. Our unit was the first stateside unit sent to Viet Nam. We arrived here last June. We were at Fort Riley before we came here so then we were pretty close to home. We came by boat from California to Viet Nam. It took 21 days. I am due to leave Viet Nam this June. I am sending you one of our Division patches. It's the First Infantry Division or better known as the "Big Red One." Your friend, George I would like to write to George. It's been a long time since he wrote to me, but does anyone have any information about how I can try to contact him? Thank you very much for any help you can give me. Malcolm Neelley Lawrence, Kansas
